This is the story of Polly Pritchard's life. It starts off when Polly's father was born. Polly's father was born in England and he bought ladies fine wine and expensive gifts. He ran out of money eventually and he was thrown in jail because he couldn't pay his debts. His friends who were in the court system got him a chance to start over as an indentured servant. His indenture was sold to a man who owned a tobacco farm. At this farm was where he met Polly's mom. Polly's mom was an orphan growing up. She worked as a maid and a beggar. Then Polly was born a little later on after that. Her dad worked but never made enough money to pay off his debt. He was careless with the money that he earned. He spent it on alcoholic drinks. Her father kept on getting in trouble and going to jail. He was unable to pay back his indenture. Her mother tried her best to keep their family together, she signed an indenture with the same man her father had. But still, there was never enough money or food for Polly and her family. Polly's mother read Polly the bible every night through all of this trouble.
Then when Polly was 16 years old, both of her parents got the smallpox. Polly's dad died first. Then, three days after that, her mother died. Polly tried to get them healthy, and she never got sick. They didn't get better. The man who had Polly's parents indentures made Polly pay back her parents indenture. She had to pay back what was left of her parents indenture and also her own too. All in all, Polly had to pay back 14 years for her indenture. Polly was then sold to Mr. Derby to pay back her indenture.
Polly started out working on teaching Amari how to speak English. She also helped out Teanie with whatever Teanie needed. Polly always wanted to work for Ms. Derby in her house doing the sewing. She never ended up doing that. Polly and Amari became friends and also she became friends with Tidbit. Polly took care of Amari and Tidbit. Polly and Amari delivered Ms. Derby's baby along with Teanie. After Mr. Derby shot Noah and Ms. Derby's baby, Mr. Derby sent Amari, Polly, and Tidbit with the doctor to sell them and bring him back the money. The doctor let Polly, Amari, and Tidbit go. He let them be free.
They started out heading south. They were looking for a place called Fort Mose. They didn't really know where they were going, if this place even existed, or if this place existed, what was there. On the journey they ran into some trouble. They didn't have nearly enough food. They had no path that they were following. Polly, Amari, and Tidbit had to be absolutely silent otherwise people might of heard them in the forest. They tried to only travel in the darkness so they would have less of a chance to get caught. Their feet were swollen and bloody from mosquito bites that they encountered on the way. All of them got sick at one point from some food that they found in the forest. Next, they ran into Clay Derby. He tied up Amari and Polly shot him with the gun that they got from the doctor. He wasn't dead, and they tied him up to a tree. A rattlesnake came and that was when they took off running. After one night, they ran into a boy who was fishing in the woods. The boy hid them in his barn, and gave them some food. His dad found them but they escaped and continued on their journey. Their next part of the trip they traveled through a swamp. After they thought they were safe, they kept going on. They got to an old hunting shelter and when they awoke there was a lady talking to them. The lady got them a wagon and they headed off to Fort Mose on the wagon. They ran into a soldier on the road. He helped them find out more about Fort Mose. They crossed a river that was on their path on the horse that they got from the lady who gave them the wagon. They got to Fort Mose. They were free.
Polly became the teacher at Fort Mose. She loved teaching the children. She couldn't of imagined a better life. One day, a boy came to Fort Mose. They instantly fell in love. It was Nathan. He came to find Polly and live at Fort Mose. They got married and a boy named Robert. Robert was best friends with Amari's daughter. They were best friends. When Robert was 15, they moved to Georgia. Polly felt very sad for leaving Amari, but she really wanted to go. Polly and her family lived in Savannah, Georgia for the rest of her life. Robert moved up to Virginia when he was 25. Nathan an Polly lived together in Savannah. Nathan died of old age, and Polly continued to live in Georgia, alone. She eventually died not to long after Nathan did. She was found dead in her town house by Robert. Robert was there for her birthday which was the day that she died.
