The first slaves to arrive in America arrived in Jamestown in 1619 on a Dutch trading ship. Virginia was the first British Colony to legally establish slavery, that was in 1661. The United States/British Colony was part of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Slaves were sent on ships, and packed together very tightly for the journey from Africa to the United States/British Colony. All of the 13 British Colonies in America depended on slavey. The slaves there were used for harvesting tobacco. Before there were slaves in the United States/British Colony, they had indentured servants. But, by 1700 slaves had almost replaced the entire population of indentured servants with slaves from Africa.
The first Africans in America worked in tobacco fields with white indentured servants, but it is not clear if the Africans were considered slaves. In 1770, there were 462,000 slaves in the United States/British Colony, which was about one-fifth of the total colonial population. Slaves were sent to America from Africa for the large plantations that they had there. The smallest amount of slaves from Africa was sent to the United States/British Colony than to any other country that Africa sent slaves to. The population of slaves grew at a higher rate than any other country that Africa sent slaves to. Slaves from the west coast of Africa were sent to the United States/British Colony. In Copper Sun, Amari was taken from her village in Africa and sent on a ship to the United States/British Colony. She was a slave in South Carolina. Like Amari did, the slaves had to endure a very hard and torturous trip on a ship. It is estimated that 20% of the slaves on the boat died on the way to the country and at the slave forts.
